Speakers at the 2019 Congress

We would like to introduce our Speakers for the 2019 Congress, with more to be announced shortly!

 

Dr Bob Hefford

Dr Bob Hefford is a consultant in the cosmetics science industry.

Educated in chemistry at the University of Leeds, in his early years Bob worked with Keracol Ltd, Unilever Research, Isleworth Laboratory and eventually started working on skin and hair products at Port Sunlight, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Clairol (hair colour and care).

At Clairol, Bob was introduced to the intricacies of hair dyes, hair colouring products and their manufacture. He was involved in the European launch of Herbal Essences and has represented Clairol on a number of CTPA and COLIPA (as it was then) committees. In 2002 after the take-over of Clairol by P&G he left to become an independent consultant. His jobs as a consultant have been many and varied from formulation, testing and regulation through to acting as an expert witness.

Dr Hefford will be speaking on the growing phenomena of ‘Hair Bond Builders’

 

Dr Sharon Wong

Consultant Dermatologist subspecialises in treating hair loss and scalp disorders and runs a dedicated hair clinic in the private sector. She is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and the British Hair and Nail Society (BHNS). She is a spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation and is the medical advisor for the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation (CARF) in London.

Dr Wong has worked with Alopecia UK to develop e-learning modules for the Royal College of GPs and has co-authored a hair loss patient support programme (PSP) in collaboration with talkhealth UK. In 2018 she created Get Ahead of Hair Loss, the first large scale public awareness event on hair loss in aid of charity.

Dr Wong will be conducting an interactive talk on the clinical diagnosis and treatments of the more perplexing hair loss/scalp disorders

 

Dr Paul Cornwell

Paul is a technical consultant and business development manager for TRI Princeton, a leading cosmetic science research institute based in New Jersey, USA.

Dr Cornwell has over 23 years’ experience working in the cosmetics industry working in various leadership roles in Unilever R&D and PZ Cussons. He is a qualified pharmacist and experienced cosmetic chemist with extensive knowledge of hair biology, hair fibre science, hair product science.

Paul is member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (of Great Britain), and the Society of Cosmetic Scientists. He is a visiting lecturer on cosmetic science at Sunderland University and contributes to the Evaluation and Statistics modules on the UK SCS Cosmetics Science Diploma course.

Paul will be speaking on “Insights into the causes of hair breakage in Afro-textured hair”

 

Dr Ramon Grimalt

Ramon Grimalt, MD, PhD (Terrassa, Spain 1965), Licensed in Medicine and Surgery (1989), Specialist in Dermatology (1994) (UNESCO code 320106), Doctor (PhD) in Medicine and Surgery (1995) and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Barcelona (2000) and Associated Professor, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator Professor of Dermatology at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (2012)

He worked as an expert member of the (SCCP) Scientific Committee for Consumer Products at the European Community in Bruxelles (2004-2008). Dr Grimalt’s 3 main fields of interest are Paediatric Dermatology and has more than 60 papers.

He has been re-elected for General Secretary of the European Society for Paediatric Dermatology. He’s been President of the ESPD for 4 years and Tricology. Author of 2 books about hair, one of them translated to Chinese. He is member of the Board of the European Hair Research Society.

David Salinger

David Salinger obtains degrees from the University of Birmingham and the London School of Economics before studying to become a trichologist. During 1974/75 he worked at the University of Southern California, developing a trichology course with a group of medical experts. Once the course was completed, it was given to the International Association of Trichologists (IAT) to administer and David has been the Director of IAT since that time.
He has trained students in 40 countries, including supervising clinical training in Australia, the U.K., USA, Russia, Canada, India, Kenya, Vietnam, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Jamaica and South Korea.
David’s book ‘Hair Loss Handbook’ has sold throughout the world and he was the first person to use tyrosine to treat such autoimmune problems as psoriasis and alopecia areata. He runs clinics in Sydney and Adelaide.

David will be speaking on Trichological practice around the world

 

 

Dr Dilan Fernando, BSc (Hons), MBBS

Dr Dilan Fernando is a full medical member of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery, he successfully established South London’s first Care Quality Commission regulated hair transplant clinic. He has a strong belief in safe surgical practice, with patient care at the heart of his clinical work.

Dr Fernando keeps abreast of the latest developments in technology and science around hair loss and marries this information with his passion for patient safety education and contributes to making this information available through his blogs and educational material which provide a source of high quality, trusted information on hair loss and hair restoration surgery.

He is also the lead Hair Transplant Surgeon and Medical Director of The Treatment Rooms in London.

Professor Mike Philpott

Mike Philpott is currently Professor of Cutaneous Biology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and leads the AFRUK Animal Replacement Centre of Excellence (ARC) at QMUL. Mike originally studied Marine Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Wales, Bangor graduating in 1986.

He obtained his D. Phil from the University of Oxford in 1990 the title of his thesis was ‘Studies on isolated hair follicles’ from which he published on the in vitro culture and growth of human hair follicles now referred to as the ‘Philpott model’. He continued his research into hair follicle biology at the University of Cambridge before taking up an academic post QMUL in 1996.

His research interests include hair biology, wound healing, the role of cortisol in skin biology, steroidogenesis and sebocyte differentiation and the role of hedgehog signalling and Gli transcription factors in the development of basal cell carcinoma. During his PhD Mike developed a very strong interest in animal replacement science and much of his subsequent career has focused on the development of human models for human skin disease.

Dr Francisco Jimenez, MD

Francisco is a Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon working in his private clinic Mediteknia in Gran Canaria.

He is also Vice-President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and received the Platinum Follicle Award from the ISHRS in 2011. He also has the position of Associate Professor at the University Fernando Pessoa Canarias.

The title of Francisco’s talk will be “State-of-the-Art Hair Transplantation and the Educated Patient – Protecting Patients from the Black Market”
